• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nikki Hootman -- A bildungsroman of sexual awakening : This is a story of a girl's rocky journey to womanhood and her own sexuality, and ultimately her reconciliation with herself and her mother. I think what I liked most about this book is the window it gives the reader into a very specific place and time that isn't "New York" or "London" or one of the other most popular settings for historical fiction. It feels gritty and real and lived-in, and having never been to any of these places or involved in this culture, it now feels familiar to me. I loved the interweaving of timelines, and how it shows us both Tilly's desire to move forward and her longing to return to that comforting place of childhood innocence. This story is about Tillie who has had a tough life and she never knew her father, so when her mother abandons her, she is forced to become streetwise to survive. Tillie’s story goes from childhood to becoming an adult, and her past has shaped her into the woman she has become now, and all she really wants is for someone to love her for just being herself. This is a well written story with an intricate and in-depth plot with personal and cultural changes throughout. I look forward to reading more from this author and I recommend this story.
